One of my foremost goals in preparing for emergencies is security of my retreat location. Being one of only three permanent members of the retreat, I cannot be everything and all things at once. I technically need as much assistance as I can muster up when it comes to security matters.
A lofty fence is nice to have, but then I have to deal appropriately with those people who think I have something to hide. They can be just friendly curiosity seekers or someone who wishes to do my family and I harm. Either way the tall fence appears to be out of place.

I once read with interest how several people have employed thorny plants as a means of security. I find the thought rather interesting and decided to investigate it further. A thorny plant can be anything from the common garden rose to the thorny cactus. Both plants are native grown items in the state of Delaware. Yes folks we do have cactus growing wild here.
When determining what plants to select for assisting you in your security matters always look for those with long thorns. Hybrid tea roses or barberry shrubs are perfect examples of a security plant. They are both artistically pleasing to the eye and act as a very effective deterrent for the unexpected visitor. As an added benefit you can always eat the roses in a dire emergency so they serve as a multipurpose plant. Most roses can double as a means for producing rosehips for use in a locally brewed tea. Rosehip tea has more vital vitamin C than you would find in oranges. Even if you are not into gardening in any way just imagine how secure you could feel with an awesome row of beautiful rose bushes carefully tucked along your back fence. Typically, the beautiful flowering Hawthorn could serve as a perfect deterrent with its nasty thorns ready for any invader.
When planted under all your windows you are adding a sense of security to each of these open spaces. No, I am not even going to make claim that we grown pomegranates here in Delaware. Another often forgotten fruit that has an abundance of spikes is the delicious Gooseberry.
I always like to look at anything I do and use as duel purpose. If I can't eat it then I can't use it. I have provided you with several plants that serve as both food and drink and as a constant guard for your property. Good luck in making your selection.
